Author's comments

I try to arrange words in poems like an artist applies colors or a musician places notes to shape music.  I want my poems to have a life distinctly their own and to outlive me.

A favorite quote:

"I used to think the brain was the most important organ in the body, until I realized who was telling me that."

My Solution to the Secret of Life:

I’ve enjoyed a long, useful and relative happy life.  I’ve found that the best way to deal with great tragedy and loss is with great faith and a hardy sense of humor.  When that fails, resort to sheer, downright, biting-the-bullet bravery.

There is no real secret to life, but the key to happiness is to do what you love; love what you do.  Music helps, especially the music inside your heart that you hear inside your head.  Never, ever let them take away the music in your heart.  That’s your song. Avoid doctors and lawyers if you can and lie about your pain, even to yourself. No one likes a griper, not even God.

Oh yeah, learn to forget, it makes it easier to forgive.  What you don’t remember doesn’t hurt you.  If you were supposed to keep seeing what’s behind you, your eyes would be in the back of your head.  If you just can’t let it go, talk about it to someone, or write about it, just to get it off your chest so you can start living in the present once again.

Smile and laugh a lot.  It takes less energy and keeps you from looking like an idiot.  When folks see you smiling they think you know something they don’t and avoid burdening you with their negativity.

If you do all the above you probably won’t live any longer but you’ll be happier, so it’s worth a shot.

"The mightiest of weapons are love and truth. And everyone knows you’re not permitted to enter a Government building with a weapon."

More about me:

I began writing late in life, after age sixty, at the request of friends and family who wanted to see my  works put into written form. My first book   lacked disciplined editing because it was practically rushed into print. This Web site is part of my attempt to offer my verses and poetry  in a well edited and better prepared form that I feel  readers deserve.  When I get it right here, I will publish again in written form.

Besides  writing,  (now age 72) I am a machinist retired from a factory in Indiana.  I spent many years as an amateur entomologist and until recently have freely shared my large and interesting insect collection with schools and libraries upon request. However I recently disposed of the collection.  I have also  been guest speaker in some middle school Reading and English classrooms where I have been privileged to read and discuss my three-step style of creative writing (edit, edit, edit). I treasure so very much an impressive collection of letters I have received from some of these children who felt motivated by my classroom talks.  Some have reported they changed from being problem students and are now trying to become aspiring writers and scientists.  If there is any fame it will belong to them as they achieve their goals.

NOTE: Although Mr. Carpenter disposed of his insect collection featuring insect fauna of the Great Lakes Region, he recently released an interesting book called Do Bees Poop In The Honey? This is a book mainly for young people and answers questions about the strange habits of several insects. This book has been selling well on Ebay and in some book stores and can be ordered directly from

Carpenter's interest in insects is a theme that often appears in his stories and poems. For instance, his first complete poem, which became an illustrated story in book form, was about a boy who chased a dragonfly and discovered an amazing treasure of pinned insects in his grandfather's garage. That poem is called The Eye Of the Dragonfly and you will be able to read it on this website. These self published books have been freely distributed to doctor's waiting rooms and daycare centers in four states and are available upon request from the author.  for more information about purchasing Carpenter's books contact him at londiscarpenter@comcast.net
